ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT CLEAN SUSPENSE
What level of violence is permitted? Shooting?
I’d say different clean authors might write to slightly different standards. Personally I’ve written a clean suspense story in which the heroine kills one of her attackers in a bid to save herself and her husband. I was entirely happy with that. Still am. In the Bible, David killed Goliath and I’m happy with that too.
The main thing about ‘clean’ as I see it is that the LANGUAGE is clean (plus no bedroom scenes), but personally I want to also avoid ‘dark’ stories. I’m a fan of stories with happy satisfying endings. There’s enough darkness in the world today and on TV and in films. I don’t plan to add any more!
So to put it briefly, I’m okay with a killing so long as it’s not described in a bloodthirsty voyeuristic manner. Some clean writers describe their work as flinch-free fiction. Hey, I like that too.
