Nocturne, Opus 1: Sea Foam by Norene Moskalski – Eco Thriller

Amongst the mixed reviews this book received was this, which is how I felt about, which is why I gave it 5 stars when I reviewed it.

“Dr. Norene Moskalski has come up with a nifty premise for a series. Her protagonists are a married couple, Kate and Jake Connors. The two doctors are research professors at Atlantic University’s Institute for Public Policy and Safety, which is dedicated to peacefully resolving international conflicts caused by climate change. They also serve as covert agents for a privately-funded, scientific subdivision of the Institute known only as the Agency. To heighten the tension in this premier book, “Nocturne, Opus 1: Sea Foam,” agents are forbidden to tell even their spouses about the undercover work they do.

“Nocturne” is a fast-moving medical eco-thriller that would make terrific beach reading if it weren’t for the subject matter. A normally passive, water-borne organism has gone rogue, attacking and killing beach-goers in the Mid-Atlantic States and coastal Europe. It’s up to Kate and Jake to find the cure for Bacillus nocturne, track down the rogue scientist who genetically modified the bacterium, and find out why deaths are occurring only among young adults in their twenties and thirties–before nocturne spreads and contaminates the world’s water supply[…]

Overall, “Nocturne, Opus One: Sea Foam” is an engrossing read, a thriller with substance.”

Two Days in Caracas by Luana Ehrlich – Christian Thriller

Yep, count me in. I’m a fan of stories like this where realistic characters are dealing with realistic life situations while also wrestling with how to remain true to their Christian convictions while they live and work in a sometimes-unsavoury world.

In this story, Titus Ray is a CIA operative. Out in the field, this time facing a threat he never imagined. He is tasked with capturing a Hezbollah assassin, Ahmed Al-Amin, before it’s too late.

But that’s not all.

He also has to confront a new operative… a hot-tempered fellow with almost no experience in the field. Titus has a choice to make. Ignore him or take him under his wing?

But that’s not all either.

In the middle of an active operation, Titus is called back to the States to deal with failures from his past and make decisions about his future with Detective Nikki Saxon.

In an effort to stop the Hezbollah assassin from murdering a high-profile government official, Titus travels to Caracas, Venezuela, where he learns the assassin is just one piece of a complicated international plot to deliver chemical weapons to some of America’s worst enemies.

Sounds like a tasty plot? Sure is. And it’s 100% clean.

The Haberman Virus by Phillip Strang – Medical Thriller

Engineering a virus as a biological weapon is (obviously) a dreadful thing to do. But a book that tells such a story can be written with clean language, clever research, and a compelling plot line.

This is such a book.

On the orders of the US President, Sam Haberman has genetically engineered a virus that gives the US the means to redress the imbalance of the occupier and the occupied in Palestine.

But his plan is flawed.

And the results are catastrophic. Continent after continent is decimated after the ultimate bioweapon falls into the hands of terrorists who will stop at nothing to achieve their aims.

One Night in Tehran by Luana Ehrlich – Clean Thriller

Here’s a fast-paced international thriller. It’s the first in a series and we meet Titus Ray, who is a veteran CIA officer on the run from the secret police of Iran.

Yes, a CIA guy in a clean thriller!

The Titus Ray thrillers are a departure from the sexually explicit, profanity-laced novels so prevalent in fiction today. Readers of this series (and also Luana’s Mylas Grey mysteries) can enjoy character-driven stories, with plots that echo today’s headlines and main characters who are trying to figure out how to live as Christians in the very different worlds in which they live.

With 4.7 stars out of 5 from over 700 Amazon reviews, this clean thriller is loved by many readers. I am one of them.

CyberStorm by Matthew Mather – Terrorism TechnoThriller

I’d forgotten about this one until finding it again just now, but I read it back in 2014 and loved it. Clean language, with awesome content written by a professional cybersecurity expert who has presented in Washington to the FBI and CIA, warning of the impending danger of possible cyberattacks.

So it’s realistic and it’s scary. Over 5,000 readers have given it 4.3 stars. Here’s the blurb…

“Mike Mitchell is an average New Yorker struggling just to keep his family together when a string of disasters shreds the bustling megacity around them.

The Internet and communication networks go down…a deadly epidemic rages across the country…then a monster snowstorm cuts New York off from the world.

Days go by without contact to the outside world. Then weeks. Murder and vigilante justice replace law and order. Millions fight to survive.

In the chaos, conspiracy theories rage about a foreign cyberattack. Was it the North Koreans? The Russians? The Chinese? Might it be the first shockwave of a global shift in power? But even these questions become unimportant as Mike and his family struggle for survival in the wintry tomb of a doomed New York.”

Fair warning: The story line is gripping but as world conditions deteriorate through the story, a little gutter language creeps in.

Honeymoon Roadkill by Pat Wilpenter – Romantic Medical Mystery Thriller

Her dream honeymoon in Australia took a nasty turn when death came calling on the same lonely country road where her father had been killed 2 years earlier.

Suspicious or just awfully bad luck?

Tess had to find out. She just had to! With her doctor husband Jayson at her side, she begins to piece together the true facts. They are more sinister than she’d ever imagined.

Merely a tragic highway accident? Not at all.

This engaging story sits at the intersection of medical, thriller, suspense, romance — and it’s 100% clean.

4.4 stars.

Dark Path by Melissa F. Miller – Medical Thriller

I’m always glad when I see a free ebook. Might be my slightly-Scottish upbringing, who knows? Sorry about that, but to this day the bagpipes stir something nostalgic in me.

However, back to free books… DARK PATH, the first of a series, is a jolly good read. It was a while ago that I read it but I’m pretty sure it’s a clean read. No bothersome language that I recall. And a great tale.

The story starts with a shonky preacher trying to stir up his congregation to put more money into his coffers. But when people under his sway start dying, things take on an even more sinister tone.

I found it engaging, a great introduction to a new (for me) writer. 4.3 stars.
